MSA - Manitoba Soccer Association

Profile

Soccer continues to experience dynamic growth both in terms of participation and public interest.

The Canadian Soccer Association registered over 825,031 in 2003 a 4.5% increase from 2002. The CSA is a huge grass roots organization ranging from 5-year-old players, parent volunteers, adult players, professional teams and professional staff with player registrations ranging from 362,000 in Ontario to 1948 in the Yukon. The largest growth in registrations has been for females, now over 40% of registrations (343000). In Manitoba 48% of registrations are female.

Association Football, which in many countries including Canada is known as soccer, is played in more than 190 different nations. It is the most all-embracing and most successful team sport of all time. More cultures have adopted it and far more people watch it than any other sport in history.

Soccer's artistic style, involving ninety percent of the body, offers a variety of benefits to participants. Soccer is relatively inexpensive; skill accomplishment can range from simple to complex; it provides cardiovascular fitness and it is fun. These benefits attract over 800,00 registered men, women, boys and girls to soccer in Canada, and of these about 20,000 were playing in Manitoba. The largest increase in player registration over the past two years has been in indoor soccer. Adult teams have doubled and youth teams have increased by 27%.
