Air Quality Advisory

2021-07-19

As with other forms of severe weather, referees have been instructed that if no cancellations are made prior to a match that they are to make the decision on site the same as they would were there a thunderstorm. In this case, referees would use the link below to check the current observed conditions and make a decision based on the MSA's Air Quality Policy whether or not a game should be played.

July 21st,

Update from 3:30 PM:
Dear Members, we keep monitoring the air quality and it keeps on fluctuating.

The government link we sent you provides hour by hour updates (click Winnipeg and then Next 24 hr on the right to get the updates by hour):

https://weather.gc.ca/airquality/pages/provincial_summary/mb_e.html

Currently it has gone back up but it is expected to be less than 7 by game time.

We have informed the referees that if the index is 7 or higher before the kick off the game should not be played. The same approach should be used for your practices.

Safety is important and we need to use discretion. We all want the players back on the field BUT IT MUST BE SAFE first.

We are giving you this guidance to try and make it work, BUT if it can’t because of the conditions at the time of the game/practice please don’t start the activity.

Update from 1:30 PM:
We have been monitoring the air quality index by the hour and it has now dropped below seven. It is expected to stay below seven for the remainder of the day and evening, and going forward. We hope we don’t see the high index levels again this year.

This means that it is safe for sanctioned soccer activities to resume today.

Please continue to be cautious and check the air quality conditions at the site below, clicking on Winnipeg, Brandon, or Flin Flon for the latest update:

https://weather.gc.ca/airquality/pages/provincial_summary/mb_e.html

Use your discretion and check before activities start and if the index reaches seven or higher the activities should be avoided.

July 20th,

The air quality has unfortunately not changed overnight, and it continues to be extremely poor and dangerous. After reviewing the Environment Canada Air Quality Health Index, the related MSA policy, and consulting with Member Leagues all sanctioned soccer activities for Tuesday July 20th are cancelled.

The health of the participants continues to be of utmost priority to the MSA and our Member Leagues.

We will monitor any progress on this matter daily and inform you accordingly.

July 19th,

Please note that due to heavy smoke from wildfires currently affecting the air quality in our province and after reviewing the Environment Canada Air Quality Health Index, the related MSA policy, and consulting with Member Leagues all sanctioned soccer activities for Monday evening July 19th must be cancelled.

The well being of the participants is extremely important, and of the utmost priority.

We will continue to monitor the air quality in our province and inform you accordingly.
